Feds, Alberta announce combined $77M for Calgary Airport Trail expansion

CALGARY—The federal government has contributed $50 million to complete an expansion of Airport Trail, a corridor that connects Calgary International Airport with the city’s northeast.

A new segment of Airport Trail will be constructed between 36 Street NE and 60 Street NE, with an intersection at Métis Trail.

The project will also include interchanges along the road at 19 Street NE and Barlow Trail, as well as a new southbound-to-westbound ramp at the interchange of Stoney Trail and Airport Trail.

Expansion of Airport Trail will be covered in part by a $27.7 million Government of Alberta grant.

Construction is expected to begin in 2018 and be complete in spring 2022.

Phase 1 of the expansion was completed in May 2014, and included a six-lane, 620-metre tunnel and the widening of the road from four to six lanes between Barlow Trail and Deerfoot Trail.

Federal and provincial support for the project comes one day after Premier Rachel Notley announced construction of the final west segment of the Calgary Ring Road.
